Tours
of the TO are part of an effort to increase the level of
understanding of Earth Sciences in the community: 6th
grade students tour the TO, giving them a glimpse into how
Earth scientists conduct their research. They learn about
earthquakes and tsunamis in Sumatra, how scientists at Caltech
monitor and interpret seismic activity, and how the Himalayan
mountains formed. They also tour the Seismo Lab, and participate
in some fun, simple rock-and-hammer tests, leaving with the
message as one student learned that: "Rocks tell stories!"

MesoAmerican
Subduction Experiment: In
a program developed by Professor Xyoli Pérez
Campos, senior engineering students at UNAM are making presentations
to schools that host the MASE instruments. The materials
for the presentations are developed by the engineering students
and range from powerpoint talks to "Tectonics Puzzles". |

Indo-Asian
Collision Zone: In
collaboration with colleagues from the Nepal Department
of Mines and Geology, the IACZ project produced
a brochure that explains the seismological network in
Nepal, which is used throughout the country as a reference
guide by government departments and the general public.

Sumatra
Plate Boundary Project: Current educational
outreach efforts, which began in July 2004, focus
on distributing posters, brochures and GPS station data
sheets to people living on the Mentawai
and Batu islands. These materials explain the regional
tectonic processes and the purpose of GPS stations located
on the islands and Sumatra.
