Using Excel files in ArcCatalog

 

How to: Connect to an Excel spreadsheet in ArcCatalog

 

1. Create an ODBC connection

a. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.

b. Open the ODBC Data source administrator

c. Slect the User DSN and click the add button.

d. Select microsoft excel driver and click finish

e. In the ODBC Microsoft Excel Setup dialog box, type in a name and description for the data source then click the slect workbook button.

f. Naviage to the excel dat file.

g. Click OK

2. Place data in the OLE DB connection pool in ArcCatalog

a. Select the data you want to display in ArcCatalog (not selecting data will default all values in spreadsheet)

b. Click Inset > Name > Define and type in a name for the selected cells. This name will appear in the list when OLE DB connection is expanded in ArcCatalog or ArcMap.

3. Connect to file in ArcCatalog

a. Start arccatalog

b. Click database connections

c. Click add ole db connection

d. Select microsoft ole db provider for odbc drivers

e. Click the user data souce name button

f. Select your xls file from the drop-down list.

g. Test your connection

h. Click OK

The table can now be added to ArcMap

The column headers will appear when the attribute table is opened
